Working at a Golf Digest Top 100 golf course in a leadership position right out of school was everything Mike could have hoped for except for the first few months. In preparation for the upcoming U.S. Mid-Amateur one of Mike’s responsibilities was to install drainage in 67 bunkers on the North Course. Starting the day at sunrise and ending at sunset was not something Mike found over appealing. Once this project was completed it was time to move to the South Course to renovate 33 bunkers. Mike found this a little more appealing where he had a hand in redesigning the shapes of the bunkers. However, it was the planning of the days activities and managing the staff to accomplish the desired tasks that Mike truly enjoyed.

Mike learned very valuable lessons in managing creeping bentgrass and poa annua, irrigation management and spraying greens. While he did not always agree with the superintendent’s methods with respect to these tactics it was invaluable in developing his own philosophy and management strategies for these species of grasses.

Personally renovating the irrigation on two of the weakest greens was a task that was both challenging and interesting.

Working with contractors was another vital experience that Mike gained at NCR. Again, in preparation for the Mid-Amateur a one acre practice tee needed to be built prior to the event to accommodate the many golfers in the field. This consisted of hiring a non-golf construction company (due to limited time) to shape the tee which proved to be a challenge and an irrigation installer who did a very good job.
